Mathematics

Subject Leader – Mrs Stead

Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

In maths we aim to ensure that all pupils:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
  • can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and nonroutine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

We use the White Rose Maths planning, to ensure progression and coverage of the whole curriculum for all year groups, within our mixed-age classes.

The documents below set out the end of year expectations for pupils in Year 1 to 6

Each class has daily Maths fluency sessions.

In Reception to Year 2 we use NCETM for fluency, the following documents show what is covered throughout each year.

In Years 3-6 teachers use HfL essentials for maths fluency sessions.

At Graveley Primary School we use Times Table Rock Stars both in school and at home. This is an online tool that helps the children to practice their times tables and develop their fluency with times tables. The children should be taking the ‘little and often’ approach, when using TTRS at home.

Children in Reception and year 1 are encouraged to use Numbots to develop understanding, recall and fluency in mental addition and subtraction, so that they move from counting to calculating.
