Governors
The school governors are all volunteers and come from various backgrounds. Our main role is to support the Headteacher and staff to ensure that Graveley School continues to be a successful and happy school.

The main role of the governing body is a strategic one, and its key functions are to:

  • set the aims and objectives for the school
  • set the policies for achieving those aims and objectives
  • set the targets for achieving those aims and objectives
  • monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making towards achievement of its aims and objectives
  • be a source of challenge and support to the Headteacher
  • monitor the financial aspects of the school

The Headteacher is responsible for the internal organisation, management and control of the school and the implementation of the strategic framework established by the governing body.

A little information about our Governors

Jane Morgan

Lisa Massey I have been a teacher since 1996 having successfully taken a PGCE course focusing on inner city schools.  I have worked in various schools in South London moving into senior leadership teams and then deputy headship.  Over the years I have successfully lead maths, IT, English, art and other subjects.  Since I qualified I have seen government initiatives come and go, OFSTED criteria change almost termly and schools faced with uncertainty.  When I became head teacher of Graveley in 2008 my aim was to cut through rhetoric and sound bites and lead a school where the children and their futures are at the centre of everything we do

Albert Swinson I am a retired secondary school teacher and now run my own small consultancy business. I have three expensive sons who all went to school in Hitchin and they are as mad about sport as I am ! Graveley is a brilliant school and I am trying to help to make it even better. I have been Chair of the Governing Body since 2010.

Margaret Gregorios

I have been a Governor at Graveley since I retired from teaching 6 years ago. Previously I had taught at Graveley School for around 19 years where I was fortunate to have had experience in all 4 classes.  Obviously I have seen very many changes in education but the fundamentals will never change.  I endeavour to make my contribution to the governing body that of  supporting the Headteacher, the staff and pupils in maintaining and extending the quality of learning in every aspect, whilst encouraging independence and confidence in our own thoughts and actions.
When not thinking educationally I enjoy cooking, flower arranging, quilting, walking on the Norfolk coastline with my two Golden Retrievers and spending time with my 9 grandchildren.

Nicola Taylor I have been a governor since summer 2014. I currently have two daughters at school in Years 4 and Reception, and another daughter who left Graveley last year to go to senior school. I have been very pleased with the school since we relocated to Hertfordshire a couple of years ago. The support that was given to my daughters as they got settled in their new classes was excellent. I volunteered as a governor because I wanted to be more involved in the school and to give something back by way of thanks for the welcome we received as a family. The ethos of the school is very caring and the focus on building solid foundations in the core subjects is important to me. It has stood my eldest daughter in good stead as she has started secondary school. As a governor,  I currently chair the Finance & Resources committee and my subject focus is History.  Outside of school I work as a freelance HR consultant with clients in London and the South East. In my spare time I enjoy watching my girls play football (Hitchin Belles U13s & U10s), messing around in the garden and practising my yoga. (Not all at once though!)

Elaine Dunnicliffe

I am a foundation governor, and was nominated by St Mary's PCC. My children went to Graveley Primary School many years ago, and I am delighted to have the opportunity to support the school. I have worked for the County Council for over 30 years in public libraries, and information management and information governance roles. I believe that one of the most important gifts we can give to our children is an education which enables and encourages a love of learning.
